Officer Who Did Not Follow Rules of Engagement Suspended

IDF Spokesperson February 28th, 2010

Officer Who Did Not Follow Rules of Engagement Suspended

During an IDF activity in the village of Husan in Gush Ezyon, Palestinians
hurled firebombs and rocks at soldiers from a nearby street. The force fired
back towards the rioters, and in addition fired at a vehicle that was
spotted leaving the scene and aroused the suspicion of the force's
commander. One Palestinian was moderately injured and three others were
lightly injured by the shooting.

The IDF, with the liaison of the Civil Administration, which is in touch
with the relevant Palestinian medical officials, has offered medical
assistance in addition to conveying its regret over the incident.

From an initial investigation that was held by the Etzyon Regional Brigade
Commander, Col. Eran Makov, it appears that the force did not follow the
IDF's strict rules of engagement.

As a result, the Judea and Samaria Regional Division Commander, Brig. Gen.
Nitzan Alon, suspended the commander of the force in question, a reserves
officer at the rank of Lieutenant, until a more thorough investigation will
be concluded. Following the investigation, further steps will be considered.
Furthermore, Brig. Gen. Alon ordered that all forces operating in the Judea
and Samaria region will be re-briefed on the rules of engagement.

The IDF is saddened whenever harm is caused to civilians not associated with
terrorism.
