Jericho WAFA 07/09/2010 - Dr. Saeb Erekat, chief negotiator of the PLO, said
that the resumption of direct talks with the Israeli side requires making
progress
in the proximity talks, according to the American-Palestinian agreement.

He explained during a meeting with envoy Secretary General of the United
Nations, Robert Serry, and a separate meeting with the French Consul General
Frederic Desagneos, that the intention to progress, is toget the Israeli
government to accept the principle of the two countries on the 1967 borders
with a slight exchange, resumption of final status negotiations from the
point at which they stopped in December 2008, and halt all settlement
activity including natural growth, including Jerusalem.

The Israeli government is putting obstacles to the resumption of direct
talks by insisting on the continuation of settlement activities and the
imposition of facts on the ground in relation to East Jerusalem and its
environs, house demolitions and land confiscation, and incursions, siege and
closure and construction of a wall expansion and annexation.

Erekat called on the international community to compel the Israeli
government to fulfill its obligations, and the abolition of the decision to
deport Palestinian MPs and the minister of East Jerusalem.

He stressed that President Mahmoud Abbas all spare no effort to approximate
the success of the talks and the progress required to move to direct talks
on final status issues from the point at which they stopped in December
2008.

He welcomed the Arab responding to the invitation of President Mahmoud Abbas
to the convening of the Arab peace initiative committee at the ministerial
level in the twenty-ninth of this month.
