into Israel from Egypt

IDF Spokesperson, Brigadier General Yoav (Poly) Mordechai announced on
Monday (June 18) the first details of the investigation into the morning
terrorist attack on the Israel-Egypt border.

The investigation was conducted by GOC Southern Command Major General Tal
Russo.

Brig. Gen. Mordechai said that the incident began when three terrorists
crossed the border from Egypt and set up an ambush in Israel near the
Philadelphi Corridor. Part of the terrorist cell apparently remained on the
Egyptian side of the border, similar to the attack that occurred on Route 12
north of Eilat last August.

The terrorists set off an explosive device next to two Israeli vehicles
carrying contractors in the Nahal Lavan region. At the same time, light arms
fire was opened against the vehicles and an RPG was fired that did not hit
the vehicles. One of the vehicles rolled into a ditch, and an Israeli was
killed during this incident.

According to Brig. Gen. Mordechai, Golani Brigade soldiers arrived at the
scene within minutes of the incident and opened fire toward the terrorists.
One of the terrorists was carrying a large explosive device that went off
after he was fired upon.

Brig. Gen. Mordechai said that a helmet, vest, uniforms, and Kalashnikov
rifles were found in the area. After searches were conducted, the
possibility that there are still terrorists inside of Israel has been ruled
out.

(Communicated by Josh Hantman, International Media Advisor, MOD

Defense Ministry Director-General Udi Shani spoke this morning (Monday, 18
June 2012), about the terrorist attack in the south, with the heads of the
Egyptian border fence project: Defense Ministry Deputy Director-General and
Head of Operations and Logistics Betzalel Treiber and Seam Line
Administration Director Brig.-Gen. Eran Ofir. The Director-General received
an update about the situation on the ground and also spoke with the heads of
approximately 100 contracted companies that are currently working on the
project.

Defense Ministry Director-General Shani said: "Our national task is to
complete this fence as soon as possible, despite this tragic recent event.
The terrorists' aim was to stop the construction of the fence but our job is
to finish it as quickly as possible in order to prevent terrorists from
infiltrating into Israeli territory in the future." He also sent his deepest
condolences to the victim's family. He also praised the IDF's quick response
and said that its efficiency and professionalism prevented more, "more
serious consequences."

#3 DM Barak Discusses Incident in the South
(Communicated by Josh Hantman, International Media Advisor, MOD
mailto:dover@mod.gov.il )

Defense Minister Ehud Barak spoke today (Monday, 18 June 2012) about the
incident in the south during a meeting with his Polish counterpart, Tomasz
Siemoniak, in Tel Aviv:

"We are still in the midst of a terrorist attack in the south. The attack
was directed against a construction site for the border fence. There are
injuries on our side, and there are injuries amongst those who perpetrated
this attack. The situation is still unclear and the incident is not over.
We will provide a full report when it is over.

We are talking about a physical attack on the site of the border fence.
Just yesterday, two rockets were fired at Israel into the southern part of
the Negev (see below). We see here a disturbing deterioration in Egyptian
control in the Sinai. We are waiting for the results of the election.
Whoever wins, we expect them to take responsibility for all of Egypt's
international commitments, including the peace treaty with Israel

and the security arrangements in the Sinai; swiftly putting an end to these
attacks."
