EL-ARISH (Ma'an) -- Egyptian authorities on Sunday closed the Rafah crossing
on the Gaza border, as Egypt awaits the results of its presidential
election.

Egyptian security sources told Ma'an the crossing may reopen Monday,
depending on the security situation in Sinai after the results of Egypt's
presidential election are announced.

The terminal, which is the sole crossing open to residents of Gaza, closed
for four days last week during the Egyptian elections creating a huge
backlog of travelers waiting to leave or return to Gaza.

Northern Sinai was placed under a security alert on Sunday, security
officials told Ma'an, adding that border posts with the Gaza Strip were on
high alert for fear of protests after the announcement of the president
poll.
