Former Shin Bet Official reveals why flubbed Al Durrah case
Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA 20 May 2013
In a live interview broadcast on Israel Radio MK Israel Hasson (Kadima),
who was deputy head of the Shin Bet between the years 1997-1999, ridiculed
the very existence of the Ministry of International Affairs, Strategy and
Intelligence and the investigation carried out by "Government Review
Committee Regarding the France 2 Al-Durrah Report, its Consequences and
Implications" that finds that the boy was not killed in the incident.
MK Hasson recommended that Israel remain silent on the Al-Durrah story with
the idea the Israeli silence keeps it out of the headlines.

MK Hasson's attitude today reflected the attitude taken by the Israeli
security establishment from the time of the incident onwards: that it is
best to hunch over and shut up and let the incident pass rather than
seriously investigate the incident.
This attitude was, by its nature, followed by scorn towards others who
picked up the challenge and after considerable effort - not covered by
Israeli taxpayers - succeeded in breaking the Al-Durrah story.
It should be no surprise that some people who were embarrassingly wrong in
their assessment of how to address the Al-Durrah story should respond as MK
Hasson did.
After all, it takes a particular greatness to say the three words "I was
wrong".
