Minister of Foreign Affairs: “Acceding to Geneva Conventions Benefits
Palestinian Cause”

RAMALLAH, April 12, 2014 – (WAFA - PLO news agency) – Minister of Foreign
Affairs Riyad al-Malki stated Saturday that accepting Palestine as a high
party to the four Geneva Conventions and their additional protocol will
bring great benefits for the Palestinian cause.

Al-Malki added in a press release: “The four Geneva Conventions were
applicable to the occupied Palestinian territory under international law and
UN Security Council’s resolutions, including the advisory opinion of the
International Court of Justice.”

He added: “As for now, the conventions would under the law remain to be
applicable to the State of Palestine, especially that Palestine became a
high contracting party to the provisions of these accords which entered into
force immediately. The fact that Palestine is completely under occupation
activates articles two and three in all conventions.”

He noted that accepting Palestine to these conventions “is one of the most
important tool that we would utilize to achieve the legitimate rights of the
Palestinian people.”

Al-Malki also noted that the Palestinian vision for peace is based on the
principles and rules of international law as well as the peace process terms
of reference.

In contrast, the Israeli vision is based on violation of international law,
lack of commitment to its obligations and attempts to impose fait accompli,
primarily through illegal settlement, wall construction, land annexation,
theft of natural resources and racial discrimination policies among others.

Commenting on Israel’s decision to stop transfer of Palestinian funds, Malki
noted: “This constitutes a continuation of the Israeli policy of arrogance
and intransigence” that is based on Israel’s sense that it is “a state above
international law that enjoys impunity.”
