War story - the checkout lady at Yeinot Bittan
Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 25 July 2014
The huge Yeinot Bittan discount grocery store in Raanana has a mixed staff
of Arabs, religious Sefardim, Russian and Ethiopian Jews. The customers
ALSO include both Jews and Arabs but that's not the point of this story.
I bought, among other things, three 6-packs of Eden water and when the
guard at the exit checked my bill it turned out that the checkout lady
charged only for one.
"That's odd," I noted, "I could understand if the checkout lady was one of
the Arabs, after all they've been fasting all day - but she's a Russian."
"Oh no," replied the guard, "all the Russians are from Ashkelon. And they
are exhausted. They can't sleep all night at home because of the rocket
attacks and all day while they work at a check out register in Raanana they
are thinking about their kids back in Ashkelon."
