Background: Regional relations are too important to undermine by flaunting
Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA 31 August 2014
It is hardly a secret that Israel shares vital interests and concerns with
Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the Gulf States.
And in some instances there are elements in the region that are so
profoundly dangerous that we can even share, at times and under certain
circumstances, vital interests and concerns with our enemies.
And it is only reasonable to expect that nations sharing vital interests and
concerns cooperate in activities addressing these challenges.
This cooperation, however does not require photo ops.
If anything, high profile conferences could be terribly counterproductive as
Arab leaders play to their respective "streets" rather than their genuine
priorities.
The irony? Some of the very same people who are now so interested in photo
ops with Arab leaders only recently expressed their frustration that Arab
leaders tell them moderate and encouraging things behind closed doors only
to revert to hardline positions in public venues.
Connect the dots.
High profile conferences are public venues.
