Egyptian army kills 5 Sudanese migrants near Israeli border

CAIRO (Ma'an) -- Egyptian forces on Monday morning shot dead five Sudanese
migrants and injured another 17 as the group attempted to illegally cross
the border into Israel, Egyptian security sources said.

The sources, who wish to remain unnamed, told Ma'an that armed human
traffickers were trying to help the migrants cross the border into Israel
when Egyptian border guard officers saw them.

The Egyptian officers shouted at the group to stop, the sources said,
causing the traffickers to open fire.

The border guard officers fired back, killing five and wounding 17. The
sources indicated the casualties were migrants and it was not initially
clear whether it also included the traffickers.

The incident reportedly took place south of Rafah, and the wounded were
evacuated to a hospital in the Egyptian side of the city for treatment.

Earlier this month, the Egyptian army killed 15 Sudanese migrants and
wounded another eight as they were trying to illegally cross borders into
Israel.
