New pump system to increase cooking gas delivery to Gaza

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Authority (PA) said on Sunday that it
would install a new gas pipeline at the Kerem Shalom (Karm Abu Salem)
commercial crossing between Israel and Gaza, expected to begin operation in
February.

An official from the PA and director of border crossing authority, Nathmi
Muhanna, told Ma'an that the pipeline would boast a more powerful pump which
would increase domestic-use gas deliveries into the besieged coastal
enclave.

The Gaza Strip has been suffering from a shortage of gas -- used daily by
Palestinians in the small territory for both cooking and heating -- as the
allowed quantities are not sufficient to fulfill residents' needs.

The head of the Gaza union of gas station owners, Mahmoud al-Shawwa, told
Ma'an that while Israel enlarged the gas pipelines several months ago from
four-inch to eight-inch pipes, the move did not improve gas deliveries
because the pump was not upgraded, despite Israel agreeing to install a new
one.

According to al-Shawwa, the Gaza Strip needs about 400 tons of domestic-use
gas every day, but only 240 tons are being shipped.

Karm Abu Salem is one of two operating Israeli crossings out of the
blockaded coastal enclave, dedicated primarily to the movement of goods and
the only crossing available for the import of fuel.
