Weekly Commentary: Temple Mount Events Highlight Truths Ignored By Deal Promoters

Weekly Commentary: Temple Mount Events Highlight Truths Ignored By Deal
Promoters
Dr. Aaron Lerner 21 July, 2017

Temple Mount events this week again highlight how the working assumptions of
deal promoters are profoundly out of touch with reality:

#1. A deal can't even rely on the United States when there is a clash of
interests: while the White House first recognized that it was perfectly
reasonable for Israel to implement the very same security measures in place
in various other major Moslem holy sites, Mr. Trump quickly abandoned the
Jewish State with this announcement:

Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release
July 19, 2017
Statement from the Press Secretary on Temple Mount/Haram Al-Sharif

The United States is very concerned about tensions surrounding the Temple
Mount/Haram Al-Sharif, a site holy to Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and
calls upon the State of Israel and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to make a
good faith effort to reduce tensions and to find a solution that assures
public safety and the security of the site and maintains the status quo.
The United States will continue to closely monitor the developments.
===

Take note: Assuring "public safety and the security" no longer is the
absolute goal. Instead, the White House gives top priority to the
amorphous requirement that "maintains the status quo."

#2. A deal can't rely on the involvement of the "moderate Arab states".

Jordan, Egypt, the Saudis, etc. are not about to publicly clash with the
Palestinians in the event of a dispute with Israel.

#3. There is no alternative to the physical presence of Israeli forces.

Israel's show of force might not have been a pretty picture - but it gave
the Netanyahu Government the tools to stop the deteriorating conditions.

Third parties, monitoring stations, video feeds, and all the other
substitutes suggested by the deal promoters would ultimately condemn Israel
to a continuous erosion of the situation on the ground.
