Weekly Commentary: N. Korean Nukes Determine Trump's Legacy
Dr. Aaron Lerner 9 August, 2017
Come what may, 30 years from now "Obamacare" will be no more than the answer to a trivia question.
Ditto for the Mexican border "wall" and a myriad of other matters filling the news cycles.
The North Korean nukes are the exception.
The North Korean nukes constitute such an existential threat - and the magnitude of the action that may ultimately be required to neutralize the threat so great - that Mr. Trump's success or failure in this matter may be something Americans (and for that matter the world) will remember for generations to come.
To date President Trump's actions relating to North Korea have been remarkable.
Mr. Trump has done everything in his power to recruit China to take the lead as the only power in the world with the ties to end this nightmare diplomatically:
+ What better way to drive home the message that Trump is a serious and
+ decisive leader than to arrange for the bombing of Syria as he hosted the head of China.
+ What better way to impress on China just how important the North
+ Korean nukes are than for President Trump to offer to drop all of America's China trade related concerns in exchange for China resolving the nuke issue.
+ Mr. Trump has most definitely pulled all the levers: international
+ sanctions, saber rattling, etc.
Unfortunately, it does not appear that this is enough.
Not since President Truman has a president faced a decision of this magnitude.
For the sake of all of us I hope and pray that Trump proves to be another Truman.
