Weekly Commentary: Regional Deal Framework for Palestinian Deal is Fake Deal
Dr. Aaron Lerner 8 September 2017
Off the record there isn't an Arab "moderate" leader who wants to be part of
some regional deal framework for a Palestinian-Israeli arrangement.
It can only expose them to domestic criticism regarding Arab compromises in
And that's before even considering the nightmare they would face if they
genuinely took on the role of guarantors and things go wrong.
Its been suggested that somehow such a deal would facilitate greater
security cooperation against common threats. But its an open secret that
the cooperation is already there - sans the photo ops.
Of course a regional framework is the last thing Israel needs.
It would inject friction into our relationships with our neighbors while
adding pressure on us to compromise our security in return for arrangements
and guarantees that are ultimately bound to fail.
With so many challenges in the region and the world it is a pity to be
wasting so much diplomatic resources on this fake deal.
