Revealed: Israel's "Mr. Television" Recklessly Compromised German Operation To Free Hostages in 1977

Revealed: Israel's "Mr. Television" Recklessly Compromised German Operation
To Free Hostages in 1977
Dr. Aaron Lerner 2 December, 2017

Michael Tuchfeld recounted in an article (Makor Rishon 1 December)
describing the activities of Israeli reporter Mickey Gordus, who died this
week, that in 1977 the anchor and editor of the Israel Television Mabat
program, Haim Yavin, insisted on broadcasting Gordus' scoop that the the
West German counter-terrorism group GSG 9 was on their way on a mission to
free the passengers of Lufthansa Flight 181 being held by the Popular Front
for the Liberation of Palestine in Mogadishu.

Gordus had intercepted airborne communications between the rescue team and
Germany and gave to scoop the Yavin, thinking that the mission would be
completed before the Mabat program broadcast.

As the 9 pm broadcast time approached, Gordus realized that rescue team was
still in the air and called Yavin.

"I begged him not to broadcast it, since it might expose the commandos, and
we could cause the mission to fail and the death of people" but Yavin
refused. "I tried to exert pressure on him via friends I had in the
[Broadcast] Authority, like Moshe Shlonsky and Ehud Yaari, but he
insisted."

After the item was broadcast, German authorities rushed to contact all the
new agencies asking them not to quote Israel Televisions so as not to foil
the rescue.

The German team successfully stormed the aircraft, rescuing all 86
passengers.
