New York, Jan. 19 (Petra) -- Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs,
Ayman Safadi, discussed Friday with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov,
ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and intensify consultation and
coordination to resolve regional crises, particularly the
Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Syrian crisis, in order to enhance
security and stability in the region.

During their meeting on the sidelines of their visits to the United Nations,
Safadi and Lavrov said they are keen on developing bilateral cooperation and
discussed steps that both countries will take to achieve that in various
fields.

The two ministers underlined the importance of upcoming summit, which will
bring together His Majesty King Abdullah II and the Russian president soon
in Moscow, to boost bilateral ties, deepen cooperation against common
challenges and resolving regional crises.

The two ministers discussed developments related to the Palestinian-Israeli
conflict, as Safadi briefed Lavrov on the outcome of the Arab ministerial
meeting in Amman earlier this month to discuss ways to address the
consequences of the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of
Israel.

Safadi and Lavrov emphasized the need to unite all efforts to resolve the
conflict on the basis of the two-state solution and achieve comprehensive
peace, which won't be achieved unless an independent Palestinian state with
Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders is established,
Safadi said.

The ministers also discussed the Syrian crisis, stressing the importance of
the Russian-US-Jordanian dialogue, which was launched in Amman and led to an
agreement to set up de-escalation zone in southern Syria.

They agreed to continue cooperation and coordination within the trilateral
framework to support the de-escalation zone, the cease-fire and stability
there.

The two ministers reviewed the latest developments on the Astana talks, in
which the Kingdom participates as an observer and supports its efforts to
achieve a cease-fire in all Syrian territories, aimed at reaching a
political solution through the Geneva process.

The two ministers also agrees on the need to resolve the crisis politically
through an agreement on the basis of the 2254 Security Council resolution.

Lavrov briefed Safadi on Moscow's preparations to hold the Sochi Conference
on the Syrian crisis and invited the Kingdom to attend the meeting.

The foreign minister stressed that Jordan supports any effort to enhance the
chances of reaching a political solution to the crisis through the Geneva
process and will attend the Sochi Conference on the basis that it is a
meeting to support the solution through the Geneva course, to which the
international community agrees on as a framework for reaching a political
solution to the Syrian crisis.

The two ministers discussed a number of regional issues of common concern
and agreed to continue communication and coordination.
