Weekly Commentary: Loss of Freedom Is The Universal Sacrifice in IDF Service

Weekly Commentary: Loss of Freedom Is The Universal Sacrifice in IDF Service
Dr. Aaron Lerner 9 March, 2018

When yeshiva students aren't required to serve in the army the issue isn't
that they aren't risking their lives for the nation.

Most of those serving in the IDF aren't in combat roles.

And there's many assignments that for all practical purposes are never
expose to life threatening conditions.

But there is one universal feature of army service: loss of freedom.

If you don't like your yeshiva you switch. If you don't like your commander
or your unit you can REQUEST a transfer - but its only a request.

If you don't feel well in yeshiva you can staying bed. If you don't feel
well in the army someone else decides what you can and cannot do.

If you make a mistake or do something wrong in yeshiva you can be
reprimanded. Make a mistake or do something wrong in the army and you can
find yourself in prison.

If you want to attend your cousin's wedding you might have to work out the
transportation from the yeshiva. In the army its hardly a foregone
conclusion you will get permission to leave.

And this "window" of lost freedom continues as long as you can be called up
for reserve duty.
