Weekly Commentary: The Public Is Stronger Willed Than The Decision Makers

A few weeks ago an angry Likud MK with a substantial military background
told me that while he is convinced that only a ground operation can make the
fundamental change required for the Gaza Strip that this can only take place
after scores of Israelis in Raanana or Tel Aviv are killed by Hamas rockets.
He was convinced that the Israeli street wouldn't be able to handle the
human cost of the operation In the absence of such a devastating loss.
I don't share his assessment.
Yes. We give a lot of attention to our losses.
And in this age when everyone is tied together somehow via social media the
death of each soldier becomes incredibly personal.
But I don't think that this weakens our resolve.
I am convinced that the overwhelming majority of Israelis have the maturity
to appreciate that there is a cost associated with taking our destiny in our
And they have the intelligence to appreciate that the cost of postponing
action can at times be greater than the cost of the action itself.
