Weekly Commentary: COVID Home Test Kits Could Empower Families To Take
Educated Risks
Dr. Aaron Lerner 24 July 2021
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's call this week for grandparents only to
meet their families outdoors wasn't realistic.
It is common for Israelis who drive on Shabbat to share a weekly family meal
including grandparents over the course of the Sabbath. Ditto for religious
families which live within walking distance.
It is also very common for grandparents to help in childcare.
So now, with no end in sight to COVID-19, it is doubtful that the average
family is going to be willing to forego either joint meals or childcare
help.
That's not to say that there's nothing to do to help protect grandparents
from being infected by their families.
The COVID-19 home tests which are expected to be available for purchase in
pharmacies this week will empower families to take educated risks.
Each family can decide under what circumstances to test a particular family
member before they are in contact with grandparents.
