Weekly Commentary: Annexation in the Window Of Opportunity Takes Precedence

Weekly Commentary: Annexation in the Window Of Opportunity Take Precedence
Dr. Aaron Lerner 18 April 2020

Today Israel's adjustments to Mr. Trump's map are almost completed and once
the map is finalized it is agreed with the Trump Administration that Israel
may unilaterally apply Israeli law to the areas which are designated in the
map as being part of sovereign Israel in any deal.

We may pay dearly in the future If we fail to exploit our window of
opportunity to complete this process.

To be clear: this window may slam shut regardless of who wins the
presidential elections in the United States.

It goes without saying that the window closes if the Democratic Party
candidate wins, or for that matter if is apparent that Mr. Trump is not
going to be reelected.

But it is also possible that Mr. Trump, in his second term, may find that
other national priorities cool his support for such action on a unilateral
basis.

I would note, parenthetically , that is is not an insult to President Trump
to observe that national priorities may develop in his second term which
cause him to conclude that unilateral Israeli action at that time does not
serve America's interests.

As I write this commentary a deal has yet been concluded to form a ruling
coalition.

It would be a national tragedy if we fail to form a government which
exploits this critical window of opportunity because of other concerns.
