Weekly Commentary: Watch For These Bellwethers - Computerized
Epidemiological Data Collection and Size Based Restaurant Rule
Dr. Aaron Lerner 25 July 2020
Expect two announcements by the Sunday evening news if the appointment of
our new "coronavirus czar", Prof. Roni Gamzu, marks a significant
improvement in Israel's handling of the COVID-19 challenge:
#1. Implementation of a computerized interactive data entry system for
recording epidemiological data. Such a system, which would replace the
current paper system, could be set up literally within hours. Computerizing
the process will save time and dramatically improve data accuracy. There
are readily available subroutines for completing addresses, the names of
establishments at a given location, and even assigning a designation
regarding the nature of a particular location.
#2. Establishing a formula for the number of customers who may be served in
a given indoor or outdoor restaurant area based on the size of the seating
area. Today the industry is subject to numerical limits without regard to
the size of the seating area.
If Prof. Gamzu is genuinely in charge and determined to get things done then
he can most definitely get this completed by Sunday evening.
