Abbas Receives Israel’s Opposition Chief: Palestine’s UN Bid is to Consolidate Peace, Stability

{Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA: It is standard operating procedure for Israeli
leftist politicians participating in meetings with Mahmoud Abbas to avoid
voicing any criticism of the Palestinians while Palestinian criticism of
Israel at the meetings is either accepted in silence or actively supported.
Here are just two of the things Mr. Herzog declined to mention:
#1. The armed wing of Mr. Abbas' Fatah movement proudly posted a photo of
the missiles it still has in the Gaza Strip - when are they being destroyed?

#2. Will Mr. Abbas take a public stand that, henceforth, any Palestinian
who engages in violence against Israeli civilians will be prosecuted and if
found guilty serve their sentence in prison and not be party to future
prisoner release arrangements?]

RAMALLAH, September 17, 2014 (WAFA) – A forthcoming Palestinian action at
the United Nations will target the end of the conflict and reinforce the
existence of two states living side by side in peace, security, and
stability, said President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday as he received Isaac
Herzog, chairman of the Israeli Labor Party and leader of the opposition.

During the meeting, which was held in the Presidency Headquarters in
Ramallah, Abbas said that the expected Palestinian action at the UN will
further aim at ending the conflict and arriving at a solution of two states,
living side by side in peace, security and stability.

Meanwhile, Herzog said that a majority among the Israelis support a
two-state solution despite right-wing attempts to affect the Israeli public
opinion.

He added that his Labor Party is working on bringing together the forces of
peace, that support the two-state solution, to face the right-wing plan
during the next election in order to give peace a real opportunity between
the two Palestinian-Israeli sides.

Herzog stressed that there should be more cooperation between Israeli and
Palestinian ‘forces of peace’ to get the peace talks back on track towards
achieving peace based on the two-state solution.
