Weekly Commentary: A George Bernard Shaw Joke? Objection to Palestinian Sovereignty Is Not Ideological - It Is Based On Realistic Assessment

Weekly Commentary: A George Bernard Shaw Joke? Objection to Palestinian
Sovereignty Is Not Ideological - It Is Based On Realistic Assessment
Dr. Aaron Lerner 23 January, 2020

There are apparently a lot of "carrots" for Israel in President Trump's
"deal of the century", but if the deal includes Palestinian sovereignty then
accepting it turns us into the lady in the famous George Bernard Shaw joke.

An ambiguous reaction to Palestinian sovereignty in the Trump "deal" will
turn that element into a building block for future diplomatic initiatives
launched under circumstances that are considerably more difficult for us to
handle.

Today our core source of support in America - which is also a core source of
support for President Trump - is in lockstep with our position against a
sovereign Palestinian state. An ambiguous reaction to Palestinian
sovereignty could very well permanently strip us of their opposition to a
sovereign Palestinian state.

Let's be clear: a sovereign Palestinian state is unacceptable regardless of
the qualifiers or limitations ostensibly attached to the sovereignty.

Qualifiers and limitations?

It is as simple as this: A sovereign Palestinian state remains a sovereign
state even if it openly declares the agreements that they signed as part of
the package that facilitated its creation null and void. And the
Palestinians would be smart enough to find ways to trash the agreements
without an explicit declaration.

Even a sovereign Palestinian state completely surrounded by Israel is
unacceptable.

It doesn't require military or political genius to come up with a program to
exploit even that scenario to ultimately lead to the destruction of the
Jewish State.

A preview: would Israel really shoot down an unauthorized Turkish transport
plane bound for sovereign Palestine?

Again. Objection to a sovereign Palestinian state is not a matter of
ideology. It's a cold hard conclusion based on the facts. If there are
ideologues in this story it is the ex-brass who are so religiously committed
to the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state that they are compelled to
restrict their analysis to "best case scenarios" in order to justify their
positions.

This week Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke of applying Israeli law to various
locations. Since then a simple route for achieving this (a Government
decision made conditional on it being confirmed by a single vote of the
Knesset) has been proposed.

Let us keep this plan in play.

Let us not make the mistake of "paying" for the move by accepting the
concept of Palestinian sovereignty.
