Weekly Commentary: Yes - Our Leaders Have Warts - Nothing Unusual For Our
Bible Experience
Dr. Aaron Lerner 9 September 2023
We Israelis are privileged to find ourselves participating in the longest
continuous period of Jewish sovereignty since the Children of Israel crossed
the Jordan River into the Holy Land.
Its indeed living a new page of our Bible.
When we think about our leaders today we can benefit by reflecting on our
biblical leadership.
Our Bible doesn't pull any punches. We see our leaders warts and all.
Even Moses makes mistakes.
Wise King Solomon made catastrophic errors in judgment.
So its unrealistic for us to expect our leaders to be perfect.
Which brings me to my Bible favorite, King David.
He had tremendous lapses in judgment. But when he screwed up he didn't
blame anyone. He took full responsibility and did his best to move on.
I could write volumes against basically every Israeli involved in the
current crisis, from Prime Minister Netanyahu to the leaders of the
opposition, President Herzog and Supreme Court Judge Esther Hayut.
They all have warts.
They are all human.
I can only fervently hope that these days, as the current crisis races to a
potentially catastrophic climax, that our leaders opt to be Davids.
