50% Increase in National Insurance Taxes Hits Workers

50% Increase in National Insurance Taxes Means an Increase of NIS 31,465
Annually for Highly Paid Workers and NIS 1,200 for Those Opting Not to Work
Dr. Aaron Lerner, 1 November 2024

The decision today by Israel's ruling coalition to increase National
Insurance taxes by 50% means that able-bodied men who opt not to work will
pay NIS 300 a month in National Insurance, while those working and earning
NIS 49,030 or more per month will pay NIS 7,855.35 instead of the previous
NIS 5,244.23 per month.

On an annual basis, this results in an increase of NIS 1,200 in taxes for
able-bodied men who opt not to work, compared to an increase of NIS 31,465
for highly paid workers.

It should be noted that the above sums include National Health Insurance.

The tax does not apply to minors.

Thus, a family of twelve (parents and 10 minor children) that opts not to
work contributes NIS 3,300 annually for Israeli medical coverage - a level
of healthcare an American could only dream of having unless they had an
extremely expensive private health insurance policy.
