Weekly Commentary: True Support For PM Netanyahu Is Willingness To Openly
Criticize Him

The absolute last thing that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu needs is a
passive response when he floats an unacceptable idea.

I would go so far as to suggest that there are circumstances that, in Mr.
Netanyahu's assessment, compel him to float an unacceptable idea even though
it will elicit such a strong rejection from his "base" that he ultimately
drops it..

Binyamin Netanyahu doesn't play tic-tac-toe.

He plays chess.

And such a move can be win-win.

He placates the entity promoting the idea by raising it.

And then he explains to that entity, in the wake of the reaction of his
base, that he cannot, as someone who wants to be re-elected, implement the
idea.

This is not speculation.

Time and again Mr. Netanyahu explained to American presidents that he
couldn't do "X" because his base would not forgive him if he did it.

And today is no different.

A passive "rubber stamp" would undermine Binyamin Netanyahu's ability to
elegantly dispose of unacceptable ideas.
