Weekly Commentary: Trump Team Squeezing Israel With All Or Nothing Ploy
Dr. Aaron Lerner 30 January, 2020
We have three kinds of territory in the Trump deal:
Category #1 Areas which will be definitely Israeli
Category #2. Areas which are subject to a 4 year building freeze so that they can remain up for grabs.
Category #3. Areas which will be definitely Palestinian.
We were planning to apply Israel law to territory that unquestionably falls into Category #1 next Sunday.
But the Trump team objects.
The Trump team is not claiming that the territory we plan to apply Israeli law to on Sunday does not belong to Category #1. Instead they insist that all action be postponed until such time as they approve the allocation of every centimeter of territory to the three categories.
To be clear. The Trump team does not see this as a move against the Jewish State.
They simply want to keep as many territorial chips on the table FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE to induce the Palestinians to actively join the process.
Developments in our region are so unpredictable that it is most definitely possible that a month from now it will no longer be possible to apply Israeli law to any place.
Add to that: failure to apply Israeli law before the elections could very well cause such a crisis in confidence in Binyamin Netanyahu that the Likud loses the elections.
What will happen now?
The talking heads are already saying that fear of failure on election day may take precedence over Prime Minister Netanyahuís reluctance to disagree with the Trump team.
HOW DOES MR. TRUMPíS EVANGELIST BASE FEEL ABOUT THIS DEVELOPMENT?
