Weekly Commentary: The News Cycle The Day Netanyahu Goes To Court

Weekly Commentary: The News Cycle The Day Netanyahu Goes To Court
Dr. Aaron Lerner 13 March 2020

Here we are in the middle of a global crises and some key political actors
remain focused on finding a way to make sure that Binyamin Netanyahu doesn’t
continue serving as prime minister.

The ostensibly compelling reason they cite is that there aren’t enough hours
in the day for Netanyahu to both run the country and participate in his
court case.

There is no doubt that there will be a media circus the first day Mr.
Netanyahu appears in court for his trial. But given how crazy things are I
would not be surprised if it is not even the first item of the evening news
that very same day.

Sure there are going to be efforts to keep Netanyahu's participation in his
trial in the headlines, but it is reasonable to expect that for every news
cycle of a few hours highlighting something in the trial there will be many
hundreds of hours of news featuring Binyamin Netanyahu handling affairs of
state.

The general public will most definitely see that Netanyahu continues an
intensive schedule as prime minister despite the trial.

Will this matter?

To the extent that public opinion drives politics it may.
