Weekly Commentary: Israeli Reaction to ICC Decision Will Be Judged By Its
Actions
Dr. Aaron Lerner 6 February, 2021
"As Prime Minister of Israel, I can assure you this: We will fight this
perversion of justice with all our might!"
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu responding to the International Criminal
Court (ICC) decision claiming jurisdiction to consider cases again Israeli
activity in Judea, Samaria, eastern Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
Back in December 2019 Ronen Perez Acting Director General of the Prime
Minister's Office, put all action relating to the application of Israeli Law
to the Jordan Valley in "deep freeze" out of fear of action by the ICC.
Now that the ICC has gone one step closer to carrying out action against the
Jewish State it remains to be seen if Israel "will fight this perversion of
justice with all our might!" or instead slam even harder on the brakes
regarding new construction in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem.
US President Biden's State Department statement that the "United States has
always taken the position that the court's jurisdiction should be reserved
for countries that consent to it, or that are referred by the UN Security
Council." is encouraging.
But, again, the true test of the status of the ICC in Israel's eyes is not
the rhetoric of our leaders but instead what impact the ICC has on our
actions.
