Weekly Commentary: Mr. Netanyahu - Making Gantz PM Exposes Country To
Dr. Aaron Lerner November 6, 2021
A top Likud MK revealed last week that the initiative to replace the
coalition government with a "national camp" coalition with Blue White head
Gantz as prime minister is being actively pursued.
Yes. It sounds a bit crazy. But mathematically, the only way to bring down
the ruling coalition is via a non-confidence vote in which 61 MK vote for a
different MK to be PM, and the only MK who could possibly fill this role is
And so. the argument goes, the current ruling coalition is so disastrous for
Israel that it is better to have Gantz as PM in a coalition which includes
the Likud and the religious parties than let the current government remain
But Binyamin Netanyahu seriously underestimates what Gantz can do as prime
No. I don't expect him to sign a deal with the Palestinians to make a
sovereign Palestinian state. The gap is too great.
But Gantz can readily act to transfer all of Area C, with the exception of
the small areas taken up by Jewish communities, to Palestinian control. He
can do it quickly via administrative measures which don't require Knesset
approval. In fact, he can take many steps associated with this, and more,
without even requiring cabinet approval.
And once Gantz is PM there is no way to remove him.
Suffice is to say that Mr. Gantz will have no problem convincing the Hareidi
parties to keep him in power for the sake of the survival of the "Torah
world" (e.g. money for Torah institutions and financial support for men of
all ages who devote their lives to Torah study).
And without the Hareidi parties it won't be possible to come up with 61 MKs
to bring Gantz down.
Mr. Netanyahu, now is not the time to seek some kind of Pyrrhic victory over
It is time for the opposition to focus on the failures of the Bennett
administration in Judea and Samaria.
Just last week DM Gantz, the same man you want to make PM, decided to halt
an initiative which would have voided the application of the law now in
place which prohibits individual Jews from directly purchasing land in Judea
and Samaria. This anti-Semitic restriction is now being challenged in the
Israeli Supreme Court. Where is the voice of the Likud?
This is just one example of many issues which are crying out for the
attention of the Likud.
Its time to get to work.
