Weekly Commentary: Raise the Bar - Jordan Should Condemn Terror in Jerusalem
Dr. Aaron Lerner 21 November 2021
"A Palestinian man and an Israeli settler were killed and four Israeli
policemen were wounded Sunday morning in a shooting in the Old City of
occupied East Jerusalem."
That is what the Jordanian Government's official news agency, Petra, had to
report about today's terrorist attack in the Old City.
It could just as easily had been a report from the Hamas news agency.
Not a word of condemnation from any Jordanian official.
The free pass continues.
Now don't get me wrong. I favor enhancing relations with the Hashemite
Kingdom of Jordan.
In fact I believe it serves our interests to find ways to help their economy
grow and otherwise improve their quality of life.
But, at the same time, I think we are making a profound mistake by literally
setting NO EXPECTATIONS WHATSOEVER regarding their attitude towards terror
against Israelis.
I would go so far as to suggest that when we set no bar there is no reason
for Jordan to act properly on this matter.
We should not ignore this.
That doesn't mean sending home our ambassador.
But it can mean calling in Jordan’s Ambassador to Israel Rassan al-Majali
to express our disappointment over Jordan's silence, or at the least a news
item in which "senior Israeli Government sources" say something about
Jordan's silence.
We need to raise the bar from the ground.
