When Bennett became prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu refused to spend any t=
ime with him in order to share the secrets only Netanyahu, as prime minister=
, knew. Netanyahu felt that briefing Bennett might give him more legitimacy=
and thus make it harder to bring the government down quickly.

This reflected Netanyahu=E2=80=99s assessment that it was more important for=
Israel=E2=80=99s survival to do everything in his power to bring the govern=
ment down as quickly as possible and return to power than for Prime Minister=
Bennett to be aware of any secret understandings Netanyahu may have develop=
ed with world leaders, or other secrets that might be shared between an outg=
oing and an incoming prime minister.

The coalition government has fallen and elections are now set for November.

So when Netanyahu made a five minute courtesy call this morning to PM Lapid a=
fter Lapid replaced Bennett, one might have thought that Netanyahu would agr=
ee to having face to face briefings. Netanyahu declined, explaining that su=
ch a move might help Lapid in the upcoming elections.
