Observation: Israel’s Critical Need For Smartest Soldiers Makes Professional
Army Unworkable
Dr. Aaron Lerner 9 October 2022

Various sectors of Israeli society have argued that Israel can drop the
draft and shift to having a professional army, thus rendering the issue of
hareidis and army service irrelevant.

In a recent interview one of the commanders of an elite high tech team in
the IDF explained why the draft is the only way that the IDF has a chance to
get the smartest Israelis to serve in the elite teams.

It’s the nature of the industry today, the commander explained, that an
extremely smart teenager can find himself with the prospects of making
millions of dollars without ever setting foot in a university or gaining
experience in one of the elite IDF units.

And there’s no way within the framework of a “professional army” to come
anywhere close to this remuneration.

There are, in fact, already a few Israeli multi-millionaires who opted to
move to Silicon Valley as teenagers with their already successful start ups
rather than serve the Jewish State. But most of the smartest kids still
serve.

To conclude in the most brutal fashion: even if you think that you can pay
enough for someone else’s son to risk his life for the country in a
professional army, the absence of the draft (“people’s army”) would mean the
IDF missing out on the talent it critically needs to win.
