Weekly Commentary: Key Development - Saudis and others reject action against
Israel at Arab League OIC Summit
Dr. Aaron Lerner 14 November 2023
Last Saturday night veteran Arab affairs hand Ehud Ya'ari was more excited
than I've ever seen him on television as he broke the story on Channel 12
that the SAUDIS VETOED MEASURES AGAINST ISRAEL AT THE SUMMIT IN RIYAHD.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco, Mauritania, Djibouti, Jordan
and Egypt rejected demands to include a call at the Arab League and the
Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting in Riyadh to:
- Prevent the transfer of US military equipment to Israel from US bases in
the region.
- Freeze all diplomatic and economic contacts with Israel.
- Bar flights to and from Israel through Arab states' airspace.
- Threaten to use oil as a means of leverage.
Instead there was only rhetoric in the closing declaration.
This was a very big deal.
And yet for some reason most of the talking heads haven't said a word about
it.
And the talking heads should.
Because any analysis - and more importantly - any advice - a talking head
shares which doesn't take this development into account may be distorted by
being based on the notion that our actions now to destroy Hamas could
somehow have a negative impact on our relations with Saudi Arabia, the UAE,
Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco, Mauritania, Djibouti, Jordan and Egypt.
The opposite is the case.
Yes.
The opposite is the case.
